You Need To Listen To Non-Traditional News Sources

What a sheltered life we live. It started nearly one month ago. I sat behind my desk working when a good friend of mine stopped in to have a chat. It was a normal conversation that we typically have once or twice a week, discussing local issues and items in the news. He asked me if I heard about the National Defense Authorization Act and then asked me if I had heard of the Stop Online Piracy Act, neither of which I had.

This conversation engaged me to the point of researching both bills and educating myself about them. I am typically one that at least attempts to go to the source first in an attempt to create my own opinion. The first thing I thought was why where these bills not covered by the mainstream media? Of course it didn’t take long to realize it was in their best interests not to cover the bills. Being that I make my living from the internet I naturally had more interest in SOPA even though it is no more evil than the NDAA.

I became engaged in the online conversations about SOPA and even went as far as developing a Stop Online Piracy awareness website. I watched as GoDaddy was boycotted and I began transferring my domain names away from them to an anti-SOPA registrar. As I continued to participate in the anti-SOPA movement I continued to keep an eye on the media. Even with tens-of-thousands of domain names being transferred away from GoDaddy and thousands of individuals discussing the bills online there was still absolutely no coverage on any of the major news networks.

It was at this point I completely realized that the mainstream media does not, in any way, have our best interests in mind. Some people have said that what is important to me might not be important to everyone else. I laughed at that explanation. If that is the case then obviously no one cares if they are detained without trial and can’t express their opinion. What a load of crap. If these stories were presented to the world in an un-biased and confirmed matter the world would be outraged and that is the exact reason why the stories are not covered.

We have not been able to trust the media to inform us on important topics for quite some time. With that said, they have moved from not reporting important news to endangering the very freedoms this country was founded on by not covering these unconstitutional bills. With these life-changing bills at the verge of being passed, the time is now to begin educating yourselves by using non-traditional methods.

How do you go about doing this? Well, it is easier than you may think. Social media is one powerful way to stay informed. Yep, I said social media. I know what some of you are probably thinking, “My friends on Facebook don’t know any more about the world than I do.” That may be the case and if it is then it’s time to expand your social network. There are many well informed individuals that you can follow on Twitter, Facebook and Google+. I just started expanding my social network and the information those that I follow post is truly invaluable. Just keep in mind, because someone posts something does not make it factual. There are a lot of opinions out there. What I do is read the posts and follow up by researching those items that are of interest to me.

There is no one source that I have found that discusses everything that is happening in the world but there are much better ways to acquire knowledge than the typical news resources. I encourage you to educate yourself and find a system that works for you. Once you have found that system, and you are beginning to obtain important information not covered by the media, don’t, I repeat don’t keep the information to yourself. Distribute your new found information to the rest of your social network. By doing this we will have a much better informed world which will benefit all of us tenfold.

Learn About Online Nursing Programs for RN’s

Many nurses have found that getting additional education or a higher degree in nursing can yield many advantages, such as a wider array of career options and the potential for greater earnings. As competition increases in today’s workforce, many nurses have turned to higher degree programs such as an RN to BSN program or an MSN to further their career.

Although nurses have many options to continue their education, advanced technology has made online RN nursing programs a popular choice. Online programs are particularly appealing for working nurses who often prefer the convenience and flexibility that online nursing programs provide. For many working professionals today, hectic and irregular work schedules along with a complicated family life keep them from enrolling in a typical on-campus program. Fortunately, today’s online programs allow students to take classes when it is convenient for them.

The Benefits of Technology in the Online Classroom

The rapid pace of advancement in internet technology has created robust learning environments with a wide selection of tools and resources to help today’s nursing students succeed. These tools and resources include:

  • Live chat rooms and Skype: allow students to collaborate in real time with instructors and other students through virtual office hours and study groups.
  • Streaming videos: give students the flexibility to pause, rewind, and review any portion of a lecture to ensure complete understanding.
  • Message boards: allow students to interact asynchronously with instructors and other students on class assignments, lectures, and general topics.
  • Email: allows students to contact their instructor and classmates directly.

Choosing an Accredited Online Nursing Degree Program

Whether considering an online nursing school or traditional campus, students seeking an RN nursing program should choose a fully accredited school. Regional accreditation is the highest form of accreditation a university or college can receive in the United States and attending an accredited school can help nurses gain the maximum benefit from their degree.

Most online nursing programs carry the same accreditation as their campus-based counterparts. In addition to assuring quality curriculum and faculty, accredited programs have several advantages:

  • Ability to transfer course credits if the student changes schools or wants to pursue an advanced degree at another accredited institution.
  • Compliance with higher education standards required by many major healthcare employers.
  • Greater financial aid options, including eligibility for federally funded financial aid, such as grants, loans, and scholarships.

Advantages of Choosing an Online RN Nursing Program

Accredited online RN programs offer the same quality education as a campus-based program, but students have the benefit of a flexible schedule that allows them to work at their own pace and more easily schedule their study time. Since the programs are delivered online, students typically save time and money associated with a commute and may have the option to complete their degree in less time than it would take in a traditional setting.

Online programs may also provide students with more options for specializations and have the additional benefit of attracting highly qualified instructors regardless of their geographical location.
